Our vision is coming to life! Within five months, we’ve seen the ASYMCA San Diego grounds transform. In February, our first facility went up. The Community Support Annex is complete and will be a critical location to house materials, supplies and more. In the future, we hope to add a food pantry to this wonderful space. We also brought in trees and rolled out the green turf for our playground and ballfield.
A big thank you to Costa Azul Contracting Group and the Society of American Military Engineers SD Post for your dedication and hard work in making the New Center for Military Families a reality!
In November an anonymous, longtime supporter of ASYMCA San Diego generously offered $50,000 as a matching gift. We challenged supporters to help us reach this goal in just 50 days. Thanks to incredible participation, we exceeded our matching goal in just two weeks! We are humbled by the support we have received to help build the new Center for Military Families.
On September 3rd, we proudly celebrated the groundbreaking of our new Center for Military Families in Murphy Canyon.
The event brought together our community of supporters. Several of our major donors including Congresswoman (D-CA) Sara Jacobs, the Zable Foundation, and the Midway Foundation, joined star pitcher Joe Musgrove and Tom Seidler, Executive Vice President of Community and International Impact for the San Diego PADRES. At the event, Seidler noted: “The partnership we have with the Armed Services YMCA of San Diego goes deep. We’re thrilled to support the new center to help support the needs of military children in our community.”
The Padres Foundation and Musgrove have donated $300,000 to help expand the center’s footprint, including a state-of-the-art playground in Padres colors and a wiffle ball field with Musgrove’s number 44 on the mound. The new construction, which includes two buildings and seven new classrooms, will more than double our capacity for after-school programs and year-round childcare, greatly enhancing the quality of life for military families in the San Diego area.
Musgrove, along with the San Diego Padres mascot, The Swingin’ Friar, brought excitement and fun as they signed autographs and joined the children from the after-school program to celebrate the first shoveling of dirt.
